About us

History

PPCNUX was founded by Bendikt Christopeit and Frank Hollenbach in April 2002. Because as a german Macintosh eZine reorganized it's web board and Linux wasn't offered any more. It started in April 2002 and is growing strong. After two years with more than 100% increase. 2006 has had an increase more than 80% on visitors and hits.

Up from the start PPCNUX offered some english content between the german news. In November 2005 PPCNUX.com with english content went live. The PPCNUX team saw some stagnation sooner or later and wanted to gain more people with PowerPC and *nix thrills. PPCNUX.com isn't made for native english readers and writers in first place. Of course we are happy for any reader and much more of any writer. PPCNUX.com was made for people like us, non-english native language, who will graceful handle errors.

Some words about the association. The Förderverein für PowerPC und Unix-Derivate e.V. Fulda is a non-profit association acknoledged by german authorities (Amtsgericht Fulda). The members are the founders and the first most active writers and supporters. Those 7 members are founding PPCNUX internet provider costs for some time without a regular base and since 2005 on a regular base. Advertising is done to lower membership rates in the first place. But there is now need for a writer to join the association. The aim of the association is to help PowerPC and *nix users to get in contact and break their isolation in a world that looks like being made only of windows but no doors.

If you like our approach, if you like writing news, testing distributions, like to help people install various open source apps, get in touch with us.

Today

In 2007 and after the Apple switched to Intel, there was a lot of discussion within the team where to go to in the future. Many people we met on fairs did know PPCNUX but only linked it to PowerPC solely. There was little chance to turn the user to an extended PPCNUX. Why should we watering a strong brand? That's why Rüdiger Goetz and Ralf Saalmüller set up mcnix to focus on Linux, Unix and x86 hardware.

Both PPCNUX and mcnix are now hosted on a modern server hosted by a great german hosting farm. We switched from our old cms to drupal.

The Future

PPCNUX will be there as long there is a need for information on PowerPC systems and PowerPC OS. And in case there will be a comeback for the PowerPC on the desktop or laptop, PPCNUX will still be there.
