PPC 970MP - the new OEM superstar?

of much cheaper x86 chips, letting Apple's x86 switch look attractive.
Reality is different though and every games console manufacturer is able to tell...
The prices of dual-core PPC 970MP chips
have recently become common knowledge though a loop way: distributor Avnet now lists every current 970 CPU.

At the same clock frequency the 970MP holds a remarkable advantage over the server/workstation x86 CPUs.
Interesting and irritating at the same time is the comparison
to a simple G4 processor.
The PPC970FX with 1 GHz comes out cheaper than a 1 GHz MPC7448 by Freescale: $93.64 versus $105.50 in 1000s quantities - from a
distributor company with its own markups. A 970GX 1.6 GHz is tagged with a very decent $137.50 while a MPC7448 1.6 GHz
comes in for a hardly comprehensible $348.20 - the same price as a Dual-Core 2.5 GHz 970MP.
G5 Quads for everbody!
Thanks to IBM's pricing policy, the open armed Power.org community und Genesi's sustained commitment to the Power Architecture this could become a truely
realistic option in the not-so-far future...
