glibc?

Those binaries that I have compiled on Ubuntu 9.10 haven't worked with Debian 5. And it took some time to figure it out. It looks like firefox is linked and compiled against the glibc-dev that is actually intalled on the system. i.e. with Ubuntu 10.04 it's one of the most cutting edge version and debians glibc (dev) is some steps and numbers behind.

I don't know if firefox really depends on new glibc version features, but it will not start if glibc on your system is older than the glibc of the system on which the binaries have been compiled.

Solution: Compile firefox yourself.

As the glibc is a file of the very basement of any Linux/GNU distribution, there is no way to update a glibc without running into deep trouble.

And I'm sorry, but I can't compile the community-build for a wide range of glibc versions out there.
